PFAS, Lead, Bacteria, and Hardness: Which Water Test Do You Need?

How South Florida homeowners can think through different water testing goals before buying equipment.

Not all water tests answer the same question. A hardness test, bacteria test, lead test, PFAS test, and general water quality panel can serve very different purposes. That is why homeowners should start with the concern they are trying to solve.

If the problem is scale on fixtures, cloudy spots on glass, or appliance buildup, hardness may be the starting point. If the concern is drinking water safety, older plumbing, private well water, or contaminants of concern, a more specific lab-style test may be appropriate.

PFAS, lead, bacteria, nitrates, iron, sulfur odor, chlorine taste, and sediment are not the same issue. Each may require different testing and different treatment strategies. A filter that helps one concern may not be designed for another.

For private wells, testing is especially important because the homeowner is responsible for understanding the water. For municipal water, testing can still be useful when the concern is plumbing-related, taste-related, or tied to a specific home.

Use water testing as a decision tool, not just a report. The best test is the one that helps you choose the right next step for your household, budget, and water source.
