What to Do in the First Hour After Water Damage
A practical first-hour checklist for homeowners dealing with active leaks, soaked floors, storm intrusion, or sudden flooding.
The first hour after water damage is about safety, documentation, and preventing avoidable spread. Stop the source if it is safe, avoid wet electrical areas, and document visible damage with photos or short videos.
Start with safety
Do not enter standing water near electrical systems. If the water source is a plumbing fixture, shut off the fixture or main valve only if you can do it safely.
Document before cleanup
Photos help show what happened before items were moved. Capture the source, affected rooms, flooring, walls, cabinets, ceilings, and personal property.
Think beyond visible water
Water can move under flooring, behind baseboards, and into wall cavities. If materials are wet, swollen, stained, or odorous, professional moisture checks may be appropriate.
